Ondanks zijn volle programma – van 1920 tot 1926 is hij leraar Frans aan het gymnasium in Haarlem – werkt hij aan een proefschrift. In 1923 verdedigt hij aan de Sorbonne Conrad Busken Huet et la littérature Française.
